PVC-U Underground Drainage Pipe — 110 to 315mm

Solid-wall PVC-U pipe for buried foul and surface water drainage, in the golden brown that identifies below-ground drainage on site. Ring-seal jointed so the buried run can accommodate ground movement and thermal change without stressing the joints.

Sizes and applications

110mm and 160mm for house drains and building connections; 200mm, 250mm and 315mm for collection runs, site-wide drainage and sewer connections. Stiffness class should be selected for the depth of cover and the traffic loading over the run.

Jointing and laying

Joints are made with an elastomeric ring seal to BS EN 681-1. Lubricate the seal, insert to the witness mark and do not push the spigot hard against the socket shoulder — the gap is what allows the pipe to move. Bedding and surround material, trench width and compaction all matter more to long-term performance than the pipe itself; the Underground Installation Guide in the Technical Manual sets out the requirements.

Testing

Air or water test as the approving authority requires. BS EN 1610 is the reference for construction and testing of drains and sewers, and air test method LA is the recommended default.

Frequently asked

Why is underground drainage pipe brown and soil pipe grey?
It is a colour convention that lets anyone on site tell immediately whether a pipe is an above-ground soil and waste system or a buried drain. Grey is above ground to BS EN 1329, golden brown is below ground to BS EN 1401.
Can I use above-ground soil pipe below ground?
No. The two standards specify different stiffness, jointing and impact requirements. Buried runs must use pipe to BS EN 1401-1.
